Exploring a Character

Exploring a character

When Getting given a character its good to research its background like i did in a previous post however the next step is to research the characters lines and think how your going to say them and act them.
This is a picture of me my theatre class during ICT Theatre.
I'm researching my Character Compeyson

My Lines

'Take Notice,guard-he tried to murder me.'
This was said to The guards after Magwitch attacked him
when i say this i'm going to portray a character who is out of breath.

'He tried,He tried to murder me'
i going to show a lot more emphasis on the second time i say 'He tried'

'didn't i say he would try to murder me if he could'
i'm going to show a lot of desperation and exclamation in my voice when i say this

First time Rehearsing Compeyson

Compeyson

Today i was able to play the part of Compeyson.
I played it with an open Mind :) Thinking of different aspects of how to play this character. This was great because when getting feedback from my assessor Ben i was able to accept it and hopefully i will be able to use some of the feedback for when we rehearse my part again.
In part one of the Observation sheet i was given a Merit and this is also what i gave myself for self assessment.
I was given a Merit because i could 'develop a role and make decisions and interpretation with some insight and imagination.' However to get a distinction i needed to make more certified choices my myself like using an accent.
For the second part of the Peer Observation i was given a Distinction.I also gave myself this, reasons being i'attend rehearsals and performances and demonstrate a purposeful sense of focus on the work throughout

Reviewing a partner

Assessing a Partner

Throughout the lesson each person in the class had to assess someone in the class.
I was Lucky to partner with Ben.
Here Ben is Rehearsing a scene with Willa who plays Pip.
He was very well prepared with his script and knowing some of his lines.
Furthermore he had chosen a specific accent for his character which distinguishes him from the other characters in the play.
Overall I think Ben is working at a Distinction level

Why are Magwitch and Compeyson Bitter enemies

Bitter Enemies

Magwitch VS Compeyson

In the play it doesn't say how Magwitch and Compeyson became enemies so i decided to do a little bit of research.
Abel Magwitch grew up as a young criminal stealing food so that he could eat (ch.42 Provis's Record)
Magwitch meets Compeyson at the Epsom Races, and Compeyson offers Magwitch a job helping him to swindle others out of their money. (ch. 42 Provis's Record)
Arthur and Compeyson steal Miss Havisham's money. Arthur has nightmares about Miss Havisham, and he dies from terror. (ch. 42 Provis's Record)
Compeyson and Magwitch are arrested and tried for felony. They got seperate defenses, and Compeyson blamed most of the crimes on Magwitch. Magwitch ends up being declared guilty, while Compeyson gets mercy. (ch. 42 Provis's Record)
Magwitch and Compeyson go to the same prison ship, off the shore of the small town where Pip lives. (Pre-book/Assumption)
Both of them escape, and Magwitch comes across Pip, who brings him food. (ch. 1-3 Pip Meets a Convict)
Pip finds Compeyson out in the marshes and tells Magwitch. Magwitch pursues him. (ch. 3 The "Dog" and the young convict)

First Rehearsal

First Rehearsal

First Rehearsal of Great Expectations and i was given the part of Compeyson.Im delighted with this roll because there's a fight scene between Magwitch and Compeyson.
I know this is rather odd but it would be nice to get use some of my judo skills.

Compeyson-Background

It hasn't been clear to me why compeyson and Magwith aren't friends so i decided to do some research

Character Analysis
Besides being a professional swindler, counterfeiter, and general law-breaker, Compeyson is the man who jilted Miss Havisham at the altar all of those many years ago. He was in cahoots with Arthur Havisham all along, and eventually he linked up with Magwitch. When Magwitch and Compeyson were caught forging signatures, Compeyson got off easily with only half the jail sentence that Magwitch received. Why? Because of his "curly hair and his black clothes and his white pocket-handkercher" (42.32). The court appreciated Compeyson's gentlemanly ways, and, thus, went easier on him. Compeyson and Magwitch hate each other and are forever fighting. Eventually Compeyson drowns after fighting Magwitch in the Thames. Did Magwitch kill him? He's not saying
